Scene kids

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Scene is a stereotype subculture amongst teenagers. It is characterized by some of the same qualities as the emo stereotype subculture, although is lacks much of the depression-based element. Scene is popularly referred to as "emo without the cutting" because it is so similar. Scene kids are also sometimes known as scenesters.

Boys often wear girls' jeans which are fairly tight on the male body. They also often sport band shirts from obscure emocore bands. Also they tend to wear shirts with skulls or weird designed shirts or striped shirts. Hair is worn long and straight, with bangs that partially obscure the face. Eye makeup is sometimes worn in striking contrast to the typically pale face. However, scene fashion varies from place to place - England does not see a lot of makeup on scene boys.

Girls typically wear their hair in a similar style to boys, with long bangs and the rest of the hair short. They will often wear heavy makeup and gaudy jewellery to accent the tight shirts and skinny jeans that typify scene fashion. Hair is usually multicoloured and very choppy.

The use of black, silver, and pink tend to be representative of the colours used in scene fashion. However, unlike the goth subculture, it is not as strict and does not revolve solely around a single colour. Scene kids often wear a mismash array of vintage clothing from a variety of colour backgrounds; it is, however, strikingly similar to emo styles with hints of bondage and goth ideologies.

[edit] Social characteristics

The "scene" usually refers to the scene of a music concert, and thus, scene kids tend to be a prominent aspect of many local shows. Many tend to haunt performance venues and coffee shops with frequent concerts with a group of friends.

The scene subculture is sometimes associated with recreational drug use, especially of nicotine and marijuana. However, like any stereotype, some people who identify as "scene" do not fall into this definition.

Scene kids typically listen to alot of heavy metal, such as screamo and hardcore music (including Haste the Day, Hatebreed, The Agony Scene, As I Lay Dying, etc.)
