The Scavenger is the name of two DC Comics supervillains, with no known connections. The first Scavenger was an Aquaman villain who debuted in Aquaman vol. 2 #37 (January 1968), and was created by Henry Boltinoff and Nick Cardy. The second Scavenger first appeared in Superboy #2 (March 1994), and was created by Karl Kesel and Tom Grummett.

[edit] Peter Mortimer

The Scavenger (whose real name was Peter Mortimer) was an Aquaman villain who first appeared in Aquaman vol. 2 #37 (January 1968). In his first appearance he was looking for something called the Time Decelerator. When he found it, it apparently de-aged him to nothing. In his next appearance in Aquaman #59, while battling Aquaman for the second time, he explained that the Time Decelerator simply sent him into a timeless, limbo-like dimension.

The Scavenger then surfaced in the otherdimensional world of Skartaris, where he gained mystical powers, becoming the Scavenger of Souls and battling Travis Morgan, known as the Warlord. He apparently lost these mystical powers and returned to his own world sometime later.

In Aquaman volume 4 #13 (December 1992), the Scavenger was shown to have supposedly reformed, also becoming a friend of Aquaman's. However, the Scavenger's next appearance, in Hawkman volume 3 #15 (December 1994), explained that Peter Mortimer was secretly part of a pedophile ring who videotaped his raping of young boys. Moreover, he now called himself Barracuda and explained that he was the avatar of the barracuda, just as Hawkman was the avatar of the hawk. After attempting to kill both Aquaman and Hawkman, Hawkman slew him.

[edit] Second Scavenger

The second Scavenger first appeared in Superboy #2. He is an old man, with a wide range of weaponry at his disposal.

Scavenger believes he is being persecuted by an unknown enemy, and stockpiles weapons and gadgets to be ready when the enemy strikes. It is not clear if this enemy exists; Scavenger suffers severe paranoia, and believes anyone who stops him is working for his nemesis.

Scavenger somehow survives to the 30th century (at least in the post-Zero Hour version of future history), where he fought Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes. By that time he had acquired the equipment of various 20th centuty superheroes.
