Scarp, Scotland

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Scarp is an island in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, west of Hushinish on Harris. The island has not been permanently inhabited since 1971, but 4 seasonal houses are in regular use. It is over 300 metres in elevation.

While a shallow ford links the island to Harris at very low tide, it is impassable due to strong currents. For this reason, the island has a place in history of the Royal Mail. In 1934, the island was the site of an experiment by German inventor Gerhard Zucker to deliver the island's post by rocket mail, but it was a failure.
