Scarff ring

A Scarff ring was a machine gun mount used on aircraft in the First World War. The mount allowed the weapon user, generally an observer rather than a pilot, to swivel the weapon around and easily fire in any direction.

The mount was developed by Warrant Officer (Gunner) F. W. Scarff of the Admiralty Air Department. Scarff was also involved in the development of the Scarff-Dibovsky interrupter gear.
