Scarborough City Centre is a small city centre in Scarborough, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, one of 6 municipalities amalgamated into the City of Toronto in 1998. It is roughly bounded by the Midland ave. to the east, Markham ave. to the west, Ellesmere ave. to the south, and Highway 401 on the north. It started with the Scarborough Town Centre Mall, and it eventually grew to have a public square, government buildings, office towers, many brand new condominiums. It also has 3 heavily used SRT stations.

Many other mini-downtowns have formed in Toronto's ex cities and boroughs, (the most succesful being Uptown Toronto's North York Centre.)

[edit] Area

The area of central scarborough originated in the 1950's, and through the 1970's became a full-fledged subdivision. Surrounding the centre is what one would generally see aroung Scarborough; a sea of thousands of bungalow's, occasionally rising to apartment buildings and a hospital or school. There is an abundance of trees. The area is also one of the most multicultural in the world, stemming from large-scale immigration to the region.

[edit] Gentrification

The gentrification of Scarborough has somewhat coincided with it's rise to second-largest borough in Toronto. Many bungalows have been renovated, and several condominiums have been added, leading to a distinct feel to the area (and a long-stretching skyline.)
