The Saxophone Cartel is a US based saxophone and woodwind collective. The ensemble's music is primarily a blend of jazz and free improvisation, but it often includes or is wedded to a range of diverse influences such as blues, funk, latin musics, European folk music, and Western European classical music. Stylistically, the Sax Cartel is reminscent of similar all-saxophone ensembles such as the World Saxophone Quartet, Rova Saxophone Quartet and the Kölner Saxophone Mafia.
[edit] Instrumentation
The Saxophone Cartel instrumentation has varied over its existence. Initially it incorporated most of the saxophone family (soprano through bass), bass clarinet, flute, and Bb soprano clarinet. Over time, members have expanded the timbral palette further through the inclusion of recorders, didjeridoos, C melody saxophones, flutophones, and relatively unconventional usages of the saxophone (mouthpiece alone, buzzing into the neck and/or body, key noise and percussive effects, two simultaneous saxophones played by one player).
