Talk:Saucer separation

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Does anyone know the episodes it was later seen in? Timo.

I've VFD'd this page because it utterly lacks context for whoever does not know whatever science fiction series saucer separation features. It sounds more like a washing-up problem (how to separate saucers that are stuck together in the sink by food leftovers). Jfdwolff 22:45, 13 Mar 2004 (UTC)

I'll try tidying it up a bit - where's my Star Trek Encyclopaedia... -- Kwekubo 22:48, 13 Mar 2004 (UTC)

OK, ill add some context and link it back to star trek. Timo.

Where was the thing about the 'power underrun' taken from? Sounds interesting. Josh 10:48, 10 May 2004

Ah, where does it say that the Soverign class did or did not have the ability to seperate the saucer section? Some sources say the Soverign class had the ability to seperate, others do not. But I didn't see anything that would confirm one way or the other. It was my understanding that nearly every ship that followed the saucer / secondary hull pattern had the ability to detach the saucer from the secondary hull in an emergency in the event of a warp drive breach. That's why I changed the article.

[edit] Underpowered Galaxy

In more than one episode it was stated that additional power from the saucer impulse engines was needed for full battle readiness (Best of Both Worlds pt. 1 among others).

[edit] Other ships that could seperate

In the Generations novelization, Captain Sulu gives the order to seperate the saucer section of the Exelsior from the stardrive section during a warp-core breach drill. So can the Exelsior-class seperate as well, or is that an error by the author? (I'm betting on the latter)

—It could in an emergency. The article states that most twin hull vessels could. However, they could not reconnect on their own. Think of explosives being used to force seperation.

[edit] Filming seperated vessels using physical models

The article notes how only one model that omitted some details could seperate. The producers could have arranged for seperate models that rendered just the two hulls as already seperated.
