There are two members of the Hockey Hall of Fame that played for the Sault Thunerbirds. Gerry Cheevers and Phil Esposito played for the Thunderbirds in the Eastern Professional Hockey League (EPHL) between 1959-1962.

The Thunderbirds played at the Sault Memorial Gardens from 1959 until 1962. The building was named for the war veterans of World War II. Demolition of the Gardens began on April 27, 2006.
