Saugus High School
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Saugus High School is a public high school located in the Santa Clarita, California community of Saugus, California, and part of the William S. Hart Union High School District. Bill Bolde currently acts as Saugus principal, with Richard Obar, Martha Spansell, and Jamie Timmins as assistant principals. Saugus is currently undergoing a major renovation, while remaining open to students. The renovation is expected to be completed by 2010.
Saugus has a "news network", SNN (Saugus News Network) that presents the morning announcements and adds a little humor to them in the process. Saugus has its own Chinese foreign language class as part of a Chinese student exchange program.
Hart, Canyon High, and Valencia High are Saugus' main rivals. Two new schools, Golden Valley High and West Ranch High, are quickly forging heated rivalries with the school, making for a total of six rival high schools in the Santa Claritia Valley. The school colors are navy blue and silver and the teams are called the Centurions.
Saugus' renovations will continue until 2010, when the new amphitheater will be complete (the groundbreaking ceremony will take place in 2007). The quad is rumored to be finished by the end of 2006, implying that the students will no longer have to eat and socialize in the parking lot. Two-hundred parking spaces were taken away from students to accommodate teachers.
Saugus High School's football team, long overshadowed by surrounding high schools Hart, Canyon, and Valencia, had a turnaround season in 2006, in which they made it into the second game of play-offs, which had never been accomplished by the team previously.
Saugus has an award winning marching band program, led and directed by Robert Gibson. They have been invited to SCSBOA champsionships five consecutive years, attending every year since its inception, placing 7th, 3rd, 10th, 7th, and 8th out of ten finalists for Southern California in their division (Saugus has varied between the 2A and 3A divisions). In SCSBOA championship competition for the 2A division in 2006, Saugus took 8th in band, 3rd in percussion, and 1st in auxillary (Color Guard).
Saugus' girls track team is renowned not only in California, but in the United States, as they compete on a national level. The team took first in state in 2006, earning them a spot in Nike Nationals competition.
Saugus has a strong Speech and Debate team that regularly attends competitive tournaments throughout the league.
