Saryupareen Brahmins

Sarupareen Brahmins or Saryuparin are a caste of North Indian Brahmins who reside on the eastern plain of the Saryu River. There are various subdivisions amongst these Brahmins. One group consists of disciples of three gotras (family clan names) i.e. Garga, Gautam, and Shandilya. Most gotras claim connection to a specific, Rishi (a sage or seer who heard a Veda from the Supreme Being Brahman. Of these the Garga's rishi and his disciples are the first who made their ashram for studies of The Yajurveda. The Gautam's Rishi and then the Shandilya's Rishi started the studies of The Yajurveda and The Samveda in their ashrams. These three gotras are graded highest amongst Saryupareen Brahmins. Also in the caste are 13 additional rishis whose disciples are known as the home of 13.
