[edit] Synopsis

Subhash Nagare is known as Sarkar by his followers in the city of Mumbai. His son Vishnu (Kay Kay) is a movie producer who is more interested in film actresses than his wife. Sarkar's other son, Shankar (Abhishek Bachchan), returns from the USA after his studies and falls in love with Pooja (Katrina Kaif). One day, a Dubai-based don asks Sarkar for a deal which he refuses on moral grounds. The don in turn tries to eliminate Sarkar's supremacy with the help of Sarkar's elder son Vishnu. Shankar, on the other hand, tries to counter each his father's rivals.

[edit] Technical Details

The director Ram Gopal Varma has extensively used close-up angles of various characters. Some angles are really unconventional. The background score sounds jarring at some points. The overall flow of the story is smooth-sailing.

[edit] Trivia

  • Ram Gopal Verma had signed Amitabh Bachchan for another movie "Ek", he decided to scrap that script and decided to cast both father and son together for the first time in this movie.
  • The term "Sarkar" (pronounced "sur-kaar") is a title, used in Hindi, to address someone of authority. It is also the Hindi word for government.
  • Some believe that the film's main characters are based on Bal Thackeray and his associates, although director Ram Gopal Verma has denied this.

[edit] Memorable quotes

Subhash Nagare 'Sarkar': There are no rights and wrongs. Only power...

Swami Virendra: [during meditation he realises Shankar is in his house with his gang to exact revenge and starts to quote the Vedas to try and get out of ending up dead] In the Vedas it says... Shankar Nagre: [interrupting] I don't believe in god, but if you want I'll give you a choice [points a gun at him] Shankar Nagre: ... I can either send you to your maker... or you can deal with me.

Swami Virendra: [trying to convince Vishnu to go back to his family home and kill his father to beat the security] If you want the power that is rightfully yours you have to kill your father to become the new sarkar Vishnu Nagre: I can't do that... I can't kill my father. Swami Virendra: The body is a suit for the soul... by killing sarkar you are setting his soul free... so you are not really killing him Vishnu Nagre: ok I'll do it

Subhash Nagare 'Sarkar': [tells Vishnu] Power is gained by joining people together, not by making them go against you.

Silvamani: Style South, operations complete North.

Minutes before the chief minister is to be arrested for conspiring against Sarkar,he tells Shankar,"Kiddo,I am the CM....i'll be out of the inquiry within 2 days."Shankar stares at him blankly and then replies after a long pause,"Even i want the same thing." and walks away leaving the CM in his awe.
