Saracena is a town and comune in the province of Cosenza in the Calabria region of southern Italy. The town's Patron is San Leone, who is celebrated twice a year, once in the spring then again in late summer. Saracena has a residential population of about 4,500, but during the summertime the population rises to about 10,000, because of tourists. The majority of tourists are former residents who left their hometown in search of jobs, and their new families too. The town is famous for their moscato and olive oil. It is believed that the town was founded by Arab's during the 8th century a.d., hence the name "Saracena". Some believe however that it was around since the Roman times. At any rate, Saracena has been influeced by the Greeks, French, Aragonese, Romans, and Arabs. It is also believed that the Greeks from ancient Sybaris went inland to the pollino mountains because of frequent saracen raids.
