- Sapo aimait la nature, s'intéressait aux animaux et aux plantes et levait volontiers les yeux au ciel, de jour et de nuit. Mais il ne savait pas regarder ces choses, les regards qu'il leur prodiguait ne lui apprenaient rien sur elles. Il confondait les oiseaux entre eux, et les arbres, et n'arrivait pas à distinguer les une des autres les céréales. Il n'associait pas les safrans avec le printemps ni les chrysanthèmes avec l'arrière-saison. Le soleil, la lune, les planètes et les étoiles, ne lui posaient pas de problème. Ces choses étranges et parfois belles, qu'il aurait toute sa vie autour de lui et dont la connaissance le tentait par moments, il acceptait avec une sorte de joie de ne rien y comprendre, comme tout ce qui venait enfler le murmure, Tu es un simple. Mais il aimait le vol de l'épervier et savait le reconnaître entre tous. Immobile il suivait des yeux les longs vols planés, l'attente tremblante, les ailes se relevant pour la chute à plomb, la remontée rageuse, fasciné par tant de besoin, de fierté, de patience, de solitude.
