SAO Kninska Krajina (Serbian Cyrillic: САО Книнска Крајина) or Serbian Autonomous Oblast of Kninska Krajina was an Serbian autonomous region (oblast) in Croatia. It was formed in 1990 and was subsequently transformed into SAO Krajina and included into Republic of Serbian Krajina.
[edit] History
After multi-party elections in Croatia in 1990 ethnic tensions increased to the point that Serbs frustrated that Franjo Tudjman, Croatia president, wouldn't give them autonomy and was planning to leave Yugoslavia. In August they created an autonomous region around the city of Knin called SAO Kninska Krajina, which in October 1990 they declared to be the SAO Krajina after it came to encompase of Community (Association) of Municipalities of Northern Dalmatia and Lika.
SAO Kninska Krajina refers to the original Serbian Autonomous Region (SAO) which was just Knin and the area around it. However some use it to mean SAO Krajina prior to the creation of the Republic of Serb Frontier, while some just use Kninska Krajina to refer to Krajina prior.
