This is going to jeopardise the entire existing chess/go project. -- Natalinasmpf 7 July 2005 01:49 (UTC)
You retards, I knew Willennium was gonna be followed up by Millennium because you're all stupid and can't be original. You're all losers.
I don't think originality should be a requirement for word associations. Actually, I think originality (as in academic associations few people can connect) should be avoided, and maybe even formalized in a rule. Yes, some of the additions will definitely be predictible because of this, as our friend above has already noted. But it's nevertheless fun to see that when provided with "woodstock" someone comes up with "softwood lumber" instead of some hippie -- therefore the final "path" is utterly impredictible, since any of the links can mark quite a distinct turn from what you expected. --Gutza T T+ 20:25, 3 September 2005 (UTC)

- What's with the word 'expectant' to the main word list (in front of 'Pending')? See 'Revision as of 04:45, 27 September 2005 by, 4.153.74.189.' Can we remove it? --Jimmyatic 19:38, 27 September 2005 (UTC)
Deletion
Can we please start deleting some of the closed topics so we can make new ones? Dposse
Counter
Is it really necessary to keep updating the counter? Should it be removed because I don't know if it is the exact number of words. • Thorpe • 11:03, 26 July 2005 (UTC)
Ya. We don't need it. Howabout1 Talk to me! 15:06, July 26, 2005 (UTC)
Whoh! We had the same word twice!!! Howabout1 Talk to me! 15:03, August 3, 2005 (UTC)
- w00t! --HappyCamper 16:56, 3 August 2005 (UTC)
But is doesn't really have to be exact. It's just nice to know what the count is about. Besides, even I sometimes recount the words and update the counter.--Jimmyatic 19:32, 27 September 2005 (UTC)
Anti-Association
Anyone interested in a Word for Word sandbox page? ~~ N (t/c) 20:57, 4 August 2005 (UTC)
- Sure, I can give it a try. Anyone else on board? Maybe we switch over when we have 400 words on our current list? Don't really care really. It's just great fun, and I enjoy it! --HappyCamper 21:44, 4 August 2005 (UTC)
New game
I'm going to try and set up a new game, and add a little blurb to hopefully keep the random links a bit more on the tasteful side. --HappyCamper 22:13, 20 August 2005 (UTC)
- Why not just ban "autofellatio" and "useless"? ~~ N (t/c) 22:17, 20 August 2005 (UTC)
- I don't think it is necessary to state this explicitly on the active page. It isn't unreasonable to expect that random users be rational enough to know what is appropriate and what is not. I added a friendly reminder that the links should remain "tasteful" and this should be sufficient I think. Since this is the sandbox, if we see any questionable links, I think it is safe to say that we can remove them as "sandbox cleanup" on sight. Hopefully this round will be better :) --HappyCamper 22:36, 20 August 2005 (UTC)
- Why not just ban repeats? Grue 05:07, 21 August 2005 (UTC)
- That would be difficult to follow, especially when the wordcount approaches 400 words - Lucky13pjn 05:09, August 21, 2005 (UTC)
- But I definitely think the next game should have a "gleefully revert a repeat if you catch it before you follow up" rule. Sirmob 17:01, 21 August 2005 (UTC)
- Me too. If any reverting is done, just make sure it doesn't degenerate into this and everything should be good. --HappyCamper 21:22, 21 August 2005 (UTC)

Sorry, didn't see Arnold had already come up. Fun game, and fast at the moment. --Enkauston 21:57, 23 August 2005 (UTC)
- Really interesting to see how it evolves! Who came up with the "branching" idea? --HappyCamper 00:23, 28 August 2005 (UTC)
Try something new?
The other day, I BJAODN'd this: Why not try it here in the next game? What do you think? --HappyCamper 03:06, 31 August 2005 (UTC)
From Three word story
What is the Three Word Story?'
The Three Word Story is a game that all users of wikipedia can participate in to create a big story.
How do i play
Just add three word to the end of the current story. It is suggested to use | after each three words.
eg. Once upon a| Time there was| A cow the| size of a| giant called bill.|
Three Word Story
Once upon a| Time there lived| A boy named| Hubert Fable who| was a normal| freak somehow? One| day he went| to the zoo| and saw a| creature that was| unimaginably ugly and| he threw a| rock at it| until it fell| and went splat| on the floor| of the cage| it was in| the zoo keeper| was not happy| he had to| clean up the| mess it had| made on the| floor. Because of | his abusive mother. | He ate minced--HappyCamper 03:06, 31 August 2005 (UTC)
- Sounds fun to me :) GeeJo (talk) 04:25, August 31, 2005 (UTC)
- Sounds like an interesting idea... once this game comes to a close ;) --CannotResolveSymbol 06:22, 31 August 2005 (UTC)
- Unfortunately all public three word stories come to a halt after some 10-20 submissions, when a wise guy finds out about it. But the idea is definitely nice, hope it'll actually work. --Gutza T T+ 20:25, 3 September 2005 (UTC)
-
- Hmm...well, we'll keep it simple and stick with word association for now. We can always start a new game later. --HappyCamper 23:57, 11 October 2005 (UTC)
Set up another word association game?
Let's set up another game soon? We'll stick with word association...the 3 word game seems a bit too hard to maintain. --HappyCamper 13:35, 2 October 2005 (UTC)
- We just need to pick a date and clear the page then. Maybe put a warning on the article page a few days in advance? It sounds like a good idea-- this game is getting too big and it is tricky to count or avoid duplicates. --CannotResolveSymbol 02:13, 6 October 2005 (UTC)
-
- Sure, I'll do that. --HappyCamper 03:28, 8 October 2005 (UTC)
-
- Now, if someone could be kind enough to do all the counting... :-) --HappyCamper 03:30, 8 October 2005 (UTC)

- Sounds great. The page is beginning to look very chaotic, and a game restart would be healthy. I like simple. —Mproud 06:15, 8 October 2005 (UTC)
-
-
- Oh, and to whoever cleans out the page: don't forget to archive it before you trash the whole page and start over... Now enough talking and a little participation for me. --CannotResolveSymbol 04:33, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

- (About Counting) If your talking about counting the words, there's a better way than doing it manually. I don't know if there is an official counter-person but if you want I can tell you.. I'd tell you all here but it's too long.--jimmyatic 19:51, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

We now have a new game!! I cleared out all the current words and all the branches and started out with a new word, chosen using the Random Page link in Wiktionary. I am going to try to clean up the instructions a bit, too, when I have time. --CannotResolveSymbol 23:53, 11 October 2005 (UTC)
- Ah, that's great. Let me contribute a word now. --HappyCamper 00:03, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
What in the world??
What's with the section "Let's play word association down here where the admins can't spot us!!!"? Oh how tempting it is to go and format their list like the rest of the game.... --CannotResolveSymbol 04:30, 11 October 2005 (UTC)
- No, leave it there :-) --- it came about spontaneously, and it's sort of an interesting relic of the game. Also, I was surprised to see these "branches" come up too. I'll do the word counting now, and once I'm done, we'll start a new game. --HappyCamper 23:56, 11 October 2005 (UTC)
-
- I kept all the branches and this section in the Archive page... I wonder how long it will be before people start branching and doing that kind of stuff again. --CannotResolveSymbolT 04:27, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
Chihuaua branch
What happened to the branch from chiuhuaua? It just sort of... disappeared. I mean, I know it's closed off, but is there any reason to remove it from future reference? Xhin 15:19, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
- It shouldn't have been removed. I'll try to find it and put it back on. --CannotResolveSymbol talk 19:11, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
- It has been gone for two days (since 3 December).... probably too late to put it back on. No one has missed it, anyways. --CannotResolveSymbol talk 19:18, 5 December 2005 (UTC)

Ultra game closed
Now that the original Ultra game has been closed, what's the procedure? Do we archive it and start anew? I hope that the branched version from the main Word Association doesn't replace the standard Ultra game; I prefer starting from scratch rather than using 21 pregenerated words. —BrianSmithson 18:58, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
- I archived (see Wikipedia:Sandbox/Word Association/Ultra archive 1) and started a new Ultra game. I clicked "Random article" and put that link as our first word. Someone check that I got the table syntax right. :) —BrianSmithson 14:27, 9 December 2005 (UTC)
Almost Done!
14 more words to go... I will clean out the page and start a new game upon my next visit if the count has gone above 400, unless someone else objects. --CannotResolveSymbol talk 06:03, 9 December 2005 (UTC)
- Done. The game seems to get wierder and wierder each time it is reset, can't wait to see what happens. --CannotResolveSymbol talk 23:16, 10 December 2005 (UTC)
Radial ultra game
Great idea. But I think people are confused about the rules (or I am). On the board as of this post, I believe that the words "frog" and "sex" were played illegally. Words have to be either directly above or below the main word, or else hemmed in on two sides. Not so? —BrianSmithson 02:27, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
Ultra Fixed Word Disassociation: 'Chaos'
Can we change some of the words in this game please? It's offsetting the formatting for the whole page. -- Francs2000 11:43, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
- Done :-)
- I have an unrelated philosphical question to ask...why is it that whenever we play word disassociation, the extremely long words always seem to show up? --HappyCamper 13:14, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
-
- That's because human brains can't actually dissociate. And those players have got "long word" associated with "word dissociation."
-
-
- Dissassociation in all directions? We might as well try making a 3D cube where all 8 directions have to be disassociated. Actually, it is quite interesting to observe - this is like the celebration of the powerfully abstract mind! --HappyCamper 05:18, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

10 games
We now have ten games running simultaneously. And I remember the days of just one word association and its branches. Whoever invented the ultra form deserves either to be lauded or shot. --69.164.202.186 01:57, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

How Anglo-Saxon came from Mugdrum Island and Preppie
So, it's a stretch, but here's the logic:
- Preppie is a term used to describe (chiefly) white Anglo-Saxon Protestants who attend a university-preparatory school
- Mugdrum Island is geographically part of the island called Britain, which is where the Anglo-Saxons lived.
Whew! That was tough. -- T.o.n.y 20:58, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
- Well done! That one has been hanging round for a few days, and its has freed (sp?) the game I think. If you are like me you will find that there are some associations that are very easy and come immediately, some require some extensive research, others will jump out at you browse the article (Browsing the Bahrain article for a Islam/Bahrain association Islamic Front for the Liberation of Bahrain caught my eye almost immediately!). A few require a lot of thought and/or research before you get there. Some associations will leave you feeling impressed with yourself, others will leave you wondering how and why your mind made that connection! Thryduulf 21:18, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
- Hands up who's created a NEW Wikipedia article or stub just so they could make an association! I started Emily Woof and Citius, Altius, Fortius for just this purpose. I think it's great that a purely recreational game can lead to the creation of new content :) - Gobeirne 22:05, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
- I've done it a few times. The most recent was Ceremonial weapon as it was just perfect for the other two words (Uniform and Dagger)! Thryduulf 22:28, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
- Same here. If anyone feels the need to expand Ashworth's Rustic at any time feel free! -- Francs2000 00:21, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

- I've never started my own article, but I do love the feeling of satisfaction from (what I think is) a good association, especially when it has to associate to three (or four!) other words. Phileas 23:20, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
- Me too, especially when I take a while thinking about one. And I like seeing someone else come up with a great association, I think I enjoy those as much as my own. 24.27.61.102 00:57, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

Radial Ultra Disassociate-then Associate
Should we color the associate boxes a different color or something, just so that after those start filling in, we can tell which boxes were dissociate and which were associate. 24.27.61.102 00:57, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
- good idea. Silver would do the job well without being too garish imho. Thryduulf 00:09, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
Duplicate word in Radial ultra cross game: 'North Sea'
I've just spotted that the word Scotland has been used twice in this game - the first time to associatate "Atlantic Ocean" and "Aberdeen" just the bottom left of the centre. The second time it associates "Scottish Highlands" and "Scottish Gaelic". Normally I'd just remove the word, but has the second one has been associated from out to the corner it would also involve removing 7 other words. In the past I've seen the duplicate rephrased in such circumstances, but I cannot think of anything to change it to without breaking the associations. Any ideas? Thryduulf 19:26, 6 May 2006 (UTC)
