Thanks for the board, i just didn't know how to do that
just a side comment, forgive me for mixing up a lot of things like switching boards and all, and omitting notation when I made them before...gah, editing two edits (though different sections) of the same page can really confuse the wiki software, I guess. -- Natalinasmpf 22:47, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)
[edit] spacing and organisation
Trying to have the notation in a nice neat and orderly manner with equal spacing so that the borders look even. However, it seems Wikipedia does not recognise multiple spaces easily. I would use "& n b s p", except it would be horrible to edit. Any solutions? -- Natalinasmpf 00:18, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)
sorry i just barely started on wikis a couple days ago...its like Wikitine to me.
sorry about the reverts
[edit] multiple players on one game
I'm interested in participating in Game 2, but just how would the procedure be carried out for 2 or more players? Should the policy be, you can use any move (as a colloborative thing), just as long as you stick to one side? What are the rules for this? -- Natalinasmpf 18:23, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Ya just stick to one side is fine...objections can be voiced and voted on by request -- SDSUPinoy
[edit] New game?
I would like to play...how do I do this? --^~^Morgan^~^ 23:01, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I'll set you up a game. -- SDSUPinoy
Thank you --^~^Morgan^~^ 23:01, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Can you set me up a game please?--User:Flamedude
Standard chess, right? Done. -- Natalinasmpf 19:05, 7 May 2005 (UTC) I want one to!!!!!!!
[edit] rules and procedures
Would someone happen to write about how to participate in this in the introduction section of the page? Rules (as in match rules, not the rules of chess), participation guidelines, etc. I'm actually not sure how things are supposed to proceed (well as in the bare minimum) and the guidelines for colloboration, et al. myself. -- Natalinasmpf 07:01, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)
ill get to the rules of participation tomorrow but the jist of it is that if there is in action by a party for more than 24 hrs then the seat is available for play by other parties.
Basically its Wikichess...anyone can make any move as long as you stick to one side per game. Also, people can voice objections to a move and it can be reverted given enough votes. Dissenting votes may switch sides. Ill add more tomorrow morning.
[edit] What to do with completed games?
Well, I've been anticipating this for quite a while now, thats why I created the Wikipedia:Sandbox/Chess/List of Completed Games page, but I have questions how to proceed.
Should I move all the completed games right away? (To help with page length as the page will start to fill up if we don't move them somewhere) Or should I let them stay? Or should I let a remnant stay with a link?
Or maybe just recent games? Or what about in the future, dramatic ones? Also thinking about in depth analyses? Ie. since the game is completed, I can reveal my thoughts for each move, as well as the rest of the players, and post comments, or maybe other analytical "here white makes an aggressive flank against black's left" type of comments from Wikipedians that wasn't involved?. Also the possibility of creating a new game from a certain fixed position, though, so the references should be there. -- Natalinasmpf 19:02, 3 May 2005 (UTC)
we should just move the completed games notation and notes over and allow for Branching from a certain position. Obviously, the losing color would have first oportunity to choose the first branch. On the completed games page there should be a section for commentary and analysis.
[edit] Game of Go
Just publicising my interest in creating an area for the Game of Go to be played colloboratively on Wikipedia. I'm thinking of having it inline with this page first, then branching off when it gets big enough, just to allow it to grow. Any assistance? -- Natalinasmpf 19:34, 7 May 2005 (UTC)
I've created a template and its demonstration at Template talk:Game of Go Position, but I can't seem to align the last row! Anyone can help me?
[edit] How bout' the First Wikipedia Chess Championship?
How bout' organising a championship? We let ...say... 32 people sign up for a chess championship. They are paired up and each pair gets to play a game (in their on userspace) and report the winner. Then the winning 16 would play, etc? It wouldn't be too hard to do. The only thing is that we need a standard way to play chess on a wiki, but that should be solvable using tables of some sort, or in the worst case just use chess notation? What does everyone think? Gkhan 15:52, May 7, 2005 (UTC)
Sounds good start up a sign up page and link it. SDSUPinoy
I'm on it! Linuxbeak 17:20, May 7, 2005 (UTC)
Me too. And it would be correlated with the main Sandbox chess page, comments, move trackings, etc. And records would eventually go here as well? But this is individual. This would be different from the current games, which are colloborative, right? Although I could imagine set teams, or perhaps bughouse chess, or a ladder rating. Also, one thing we lack - publicity. We need to be shamelessly advertised somehow, because we aren't getting as much activity as I would like. Well for a bustling game area, anyway, but then we would probably require several pages running concurrently (like at the Sandbox),f or that. -- Natalinasmpf 17:25, 7 May 2005 (UTC)
Sign up page created here. Enjoy. Linuxbeak 18:57, May 7, 2005 (UTC)
If we are going to have a championship it really should be organised better, not out of the sandbox. Does anyone have a problem with moving the signup page to something like Wikipedia:Chess championship? And we really should have an official scorekeeper or something. Gkhan 10:59, May 8, 2005 (UTC)
Sure; I've got no problem. Just tell me when it happens so I can change the notice on IRC. Linuxbeak 12:04, May 8, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] standardised documentation
Creating the Weiqi template made me realise how important it is to have standardised documentation. How the template works, and for size, etc. especially within the template invocation area itself, ie. the coordinates are in the template, but doesn't seem to be Perhaps that should be standardised? Well, I'll next time we get a game, I'll format with legend and all, with the coordinates in them, as well as probably converting existing formats when I have the time. We need some instructions for the newbies, as well as a general idea how the template works. -- Natalinasmpf 03:49, 8 May 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Removing oneself from a game
Is there a prosedure for romoving oneself from a game? 1 black hand
[edit] cleaner notation
Might it be better to remove the comment tags from the game notation, using the "=" style instead, as in:
|
{| style="float: right; margin-right: 1em;" | {{Chess position|= 8 |rd|nd|bd|qd|kd|bd|nd|rd|= 7 |pd|pd|pd|pd|pd|pd|pd|pd|= 6 | | | | | | | | |= 5 | | | | | | | | |= 4 | | | | | | | | |= 3 | | | | | | | | |= 2 |pl|pl|pl|pl|pl|pl|pl|pl|= 1 |rl|nl|bl|ql|kl|bl|nl|rl|= a b c d e f g h |30}} |}

[edit] Chess
I have written something relevant that I believe is worth reading. I would really appreciate it if you could give me feedback on it. This is a speech I wrote for the awards ceramony at the chess club that I coach. Thank you, 1 black hand °T°
[edit] New games
Just wondering how do you start new games. I just found this area of chess and am intersted in playing. Falphin 19:33, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I can set one up for you, but there are instructions in the introduction area of the page...simply make a new section and copy the board over, and create a space for notation. -- Natalinasmpf 22:01, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I can make it, sorry I wasn't sure if you can just place them on the page or not. Falphin 00:57, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- What should I call the new game?
- Here is a style where you can have both players' perspectives: User:Tparker393/Chess Nathan256 28 June 2005 13:20 (UTC)
[edit] Black's perspective
{{chess position Inverse|= 1 |rl|nl|bl|kl|ql|bl|nl|rl|= 2 |pl|pl|pl|pl|pl|pl|pl|pl|= 3 | | | | | | | | |= 4 | | | | | | | | |= 5 | | | | | | | | |= 6 | | | | | | | | |= 7 |pd|pd|pd|pd|pd|pd|pd|pd|= 8 |rd|nd|bd|kd|qd|bd|nd|rd|= h g f e d c b a |30}}
produces:
1 | ||||||||
2 | ||||||||
3 | ||||||||
4 | ||||||||
5 | ||||||||
6 | ||||||||
7 | ||||||||
8 | ||||||||
h | g | f | e | d | c | b | a |
The rank and file numbering is wrong in Black's perspective above. It should be reversed. - Rajesh 28 June 2005 16:05 (UTC)
- I fixed it. It was a problem with the template, as well. A new template has to be used. -- Natalinasmpf 28 June 2005 20:00 (UTC)

- Thanks. The ranks look good now. The files need to be reversed. -- Rajesh 28 June 2005 21:03 (UTC)

[edit] Style Error
It appears that the "float: right;" parameter in the chess boards causes the board to disappear behind the move box (happening on my IE 6.0) Should we simplify this by removing the "float: right;" or perhaps fixing the CSS in another way? It seems that the problem is with the CSS associated with the "pre" tag in the MonoBook (default) skin. Other skins work fine. - Rajesh 30 June 2005 18:41 (UTC)
[edit] Meta project
I just wanted to inform everyone that I started a meta chess wikiproject to create uniform chess coverage across all wikipedias. I hope everyone goes and contributes. This link is Broken 1 July 2005 02:16 (UTC)
[edit] A gift
During my time at Wikipedia I have done a number of foolish things. One such foolish mistake I have made is the creation of Wikipedia:Checkers. However, whilst designing and experimenting, I came across a novel idea for a game board that is both compact and convenient. I have replaced the checkers template with the chess template and it is available for future use here or anywhere else people play chess. The 'Last move list' and the 'comments:' area expand with scrollable windows as needed so that they do not end up taking huge amounts of page space--which makes a page hard to navigate. The board is thus:
Gameboard 1
Last Move List for Gameboard 1:
- List your last moves here with the most recent on top!
- Ex. F5-F5 (Demonstration)
- Ex. F5-F5 (Demonstration)

Comments:
- Post all of your comments here with the most recent on the top for easier navigation. This will expand into a scrollable window as well.
Enjoy. Jaberwocky6669 July 1, 2005 04:13 (UTC)
Just a comment, to preserve the entire nature of notation and for following afterwards, I think it still should be oldest to newest as the list move, just that perhaps at the very top of the move list, what the most recent move was, in words.
Ie. Move 2, Black: Black Knight moved from g1 to f3
1. move here move here 2. move here Nf3
Stuff like that. Innovative though, we'll probably use it often. -- Natalinasmpf 1 July 2005 14:11 (UTC)
