Santo António (Funchal)

Santo António (Portuguese meaning Saint Anthony) is a parish in the northeastern part of the district and a suburb of Funchal in the Madeira Islands. The population in 2001 is 21,931, its density is 987.4/km² and the area is 22.21 km². This parish covers the downtown portion of Funchal. Santo António is the largest parish in population. It is located about 3 km NE of downtown Funchal. The main industry are businesses. It is connected with a road linking Monte and Camacha. The suburban parish sits on a southern slope of the mountain. The northern and the eastern half are covered with forests. The rest of area are made up of urban and residential areas. The stream which is mainly dry lies to the west.
