Santiago (municipality)

Santiago is a commune of Chile, located at the center of the province of Santiago, in the Santiago Metropolitan Region. It encompasses the oldest part of the city, including downtown, and houses all major government infrastructure, including the government palace La Moneda. It has an area of 22.4 km², a population of 200,792 (2002 census) and an average household income of $28,671 in PPP US dollars (2000). Locally, Santiago is usually abbreviated Stgo.
