Sandra Nasić
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sandra Nasić was the lead singer of the rock band Guano Apes. Sandra is born in Göttingen, Germany, on May 25, 1976, to Croatian parents.
After graduating from high school she planned to study Art and Design. But one night in 1994 at a university party the other three members of the future band spotted her. Not long after some discussion she started rehearsing with them. Nasic was originally introduced to the band by a friend who wanted their opinion on a singer he'd discovered for his own project. According to guitarist Henning Ruemenapp, the band "stole" her from him, though they remain friends.
Guano Apes came a long way from their early days playing at bars and discos to becoming a best-selling band in countries like Germany, Portugal, The Netherlands, Croatia and Poland. The band sold 150,000 copies of their debut disc "Proud Like A God" in the United States and toured with P.O.D. and Creed in the U.S. The band shot one video in the United States on that tour, "No Speech" from their second CD, "Don't Give Me Names". But the U.S. release of the disc was pulled at the 11th hour due to major reorganization within RCA.
Sandra has a unique voice for a female rock singer, able to cover the range of aggressive to lilting female vulnerability within a single song. Her style made her a standout in the music scene almost from the inception of her career. She has been compared by many to male singers such as Serj Tankian and Chino Moreno. System of a Down, Deftones and Korn are, in fact, some of Sandra's favorite bands, revealing her musical influences.
In 2001, she was given an EinsLive Krone award for Best Singer.
After Guano Apes completed a brief farewell tour in support of their greatest hits package "Planet of the Apes" in February 2005, she announced a solo career (signing with her former Apes' label Gun) with her debut album slated for a late 2006 release. As of August 2006, no word has come from Berlin (where she is recording) on whether or not the album is on track. Other collaborations include Apocalyptica and DJ Tomekk.
