Sanctuary was a heavy metal band founded in Seattle, Washington in 1985 consisting of Warrel Dane (vocals), Lenny Rutledge (guitar), Sean Blosl (guitar), Jim Sheppard (bass), and Dave Budbill (drums).
Before play in Sanctuary, Warrel Dane was the vocalist of the heavy metal band Serpen's Night, which released a full-lentgh in 1983. Jim Sheppard, played in a hair metal band called Sleeze, with the vocalist Layne Staley (later on Alice In Chains) around 1985.
In 1987 they got a deal with Epic Records and released they debut called Refuge Denied. It was produced by Dave Mustaine, leader of Megadeth band. Followed a tour along side of Megadeth and the german band Warlock.
After the tour, they entered in studio to record their second and final studio album, called Into The Mirror Black in 1990. A video clipe for the song "Future Tense" was made and it received some air play on Headbanger's Ball of MTV. During the tour (with the bands Forbidden and Death Angel), the guitarrist Lenny Rutledge left the band and was replaced by Jeff Loomis.
No longer after that, in the beggining of the composition process of the third album, which was never released, following the pressure from Epic Records to fit in with the flourishing Seattle grunge scene, Sanctuay disbanded in the end of 1991 by the members desagree in which way the band should turn (stay heavy metal or follow the grunge).
Epic Records released a rare live EP, called Into The Mirror Live to finish the contract.
After the disbanding, Warrel Dane, Jim Sheppard and Jeff Loomis formed the band Nevermore in 1992. Dave Budbill enterd in a religious group and recently is working in the solo project of Warrel Dane. Sean Blosl started to work with soundtracks for independent movies and Lenny Rutledge became a musical producer and has his own studio and helped Nevermore on the demo sessions of Dreaming Neon Black album in 1999.
