San Nicolás de los Garza

San Nicolás de los Garza, sometimes known only as San Nicolás, is a municipality that is part of the Greater Monterrey metropolitan area. It houses the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (Autonomous University of Nuevo León), one of the most prestigious public schools in Latin America.

According to Mexico's national development indices, people that live in San Nicolás are among the happiest in the country, and have the greatest quality of life standard in the nation. San Nicolás, although less populated than Monterrey, has the higher population density.

The current municipal president (mayor) of San Nicolás de los Garza is Zeferino Salgado Almaguer representing the National Action Party (PAN).

Factories for important Mexican companies, including Cemex, and Hylsa are located here.

San Nicolás is also a strong commercial center. It houses the Centro Comercial Sendero shopping mall, and other department stores to service the increasing population of the municipality.

The main campus of the University of the State of Nuevo León is housed in this municipality.

This municipality is also the house of the University's First Division team, the UANL Tigres, which is rivaled by a competing team, the Club de Fútbol Monterrey.
