San Luis, Santa Bárbara

San Luis is a municipality in the Honduran department of Santa Bárbara.


About San Luis: San Luis has a population of about 15,000 with its 44 surrounding aldeas. In the casco urbano there are around 6,000. San Luis is about an hour north of Colinas. It is about 3 hours by bus from Santa Bárbara and about 3 hours by bus from San Pedro Sula. Both can be made in under 2 hours by automobile. San Luis has an incredibly beautiful town park in front of the catholic church.

Electricity and running water have been in most homes since 1976 when Mayor Pompilio was in office. He also was responsible for the paving of some of the roads. Telephones are scarce, but not uncommon.

San Luis is in a very beautiful region of cool pine-covered hills. This is a big coffee-growing region and the town is relatively prosperous for Honduras.

Agriculture: San Luis is a coffee town. IHCAFE is an important business in town that helps with the production and distribution of coffee.

Technology: HONDUTEL has a small office attached to the impressive municipalidad where local and long distance calling can be accomplished. COCHCIT was built in San Luis in 2003 due to Peace Corps Volunteer Colleen Gross. It is attached to the Red Cross (Cruz Roja) building. Internet, phone calls and classes are available.

Health Care: There is a clinic operated by Evangelical missionaries attached to the Evangelical radio station.
