[edit] Geography
From the highway there is not much to see, but the town square has a new basketball court, along with a several churches. There is also the Ayudamiento, the unit of local government. There is a small secondary school, a clinic, and a few small grocery stores, along with several bars. The region is filled with sugar cane fields, and nearby the town is a large sugar refinery called "Ingenio Caei."
If you take the road north of town it will lead through several small neighborhoods, and will eventually lead to the river Nizao. There are many sand mines in the area, but there are some very good swimming spots as the river is very clear. Farther up the road is the Valdesia Dam, and although the area is very pretty the dam is guarded by the army, using the term "guarded" loosely.
In 2003 the town suffered a terrible flood that killed one person and covered roughly half the town.
