San Giorgio Monastery

The San Giorgio Monastery is a Benedictine monastery in Venice. The monastery was founded in 982 AD following the donation from the Doge Tribuno Memmo. It lies on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, the marshes of which were drained by the monks.
The monastery had considerable autonomy and maintained close links with Florence and Padua. The monastery became a favoured location for foreign dignitaries to stay while in the Venice.
