[edit] Computer-related Biography

His first contact with computer world was in 1980, when his mother opened a printing service center where was installed a very big Compugraphic photocomposition machine.

In 1982 he begun to use Basic and Z80 assembly languages, since he used a Sinclair ZX81 computer with his best friend, Renato Tarabella. In 1983 he bought a ZX_Spectrum, intensively used to build games, utilities, and small DB-based applications for personal use. Few years later, he moved from his hometown to Saluzzo, where expanded his possibilities using a Sinclair QL, Motorola 68008-based. With this computer he wrote a lot of complex programs, approaching some other programming languages (Forth, Lisp, Pascal) and some rudiments of concurrent programming.

In 1988 he approached to his first "XT-clone" computer (as it was called a non-IBM pc), and he learned the power of C and versatility of Pascal. The same year he moved to Pisa to attend courses at Computer Science university, whose computer lab was his most stimulating environment. Here he was invited, by lab administrators, to build some utilities to manage printer queues for students, wrote in C language. He collaborates also in writing an engine for Core-Wars, lately used by other students for some unofficial "departmental challenges".

In 1989 he attended military service in 14° Rgt. Bersaglieri "Sernaglia", in Albenga, as computer specialist. Starting from 1990 he mixed study and work, moving his interest in Linux operating system and Slackware distribution, specializing himself in system administration and deeply tuning of server features. In the meantime, he studied web markup and scripting languages, like HTML and Javascript. In following years he was responsible of Computer Department of Pisa's Branch of LIPU (Italian League for Birds Protection), building and managing the official website, he wrote a lot of software for local shops and institutions, and begun to deeply program server-side applications for Linux boxes. He was involved in remote administration of some servers at Politecnico di Milano, where he contributed in debugging and adapting first releases of FSP (a connectionless protocol) to some universitary servers.

In 1997 he begun a stable collaboration with Artemis web agency, where he started to work as programmer and sysadm, until he reached the role of Responsible of IT Dept. of main branch. During this 5-years activity he specialized in projecting and deploying web applications, LAMP-based and Microsoft-based, and learned Java language. In 2001 he graduated in Computer Science, with a thesis wrote in Perl language: a web-based LL(1) parser for top-down attributed grammars, online at his LLParser.org website.

In 2002 he begun his experience at NetXcalibur, where he is specializing in innovative, beyond state-of-the-art, design and implementation of applicatin for mobile users: in this stimulating environment he learned Java for small devices, J2ME. In 2004 he was deeply involved in EU co-founded Kiwi project, where he deeply contributed in design and implementation of Knowledge DWH and other software modules.

Starting from 2005 he was involved in other two projects, providing dynamic location-based public information for rural tourists or travellers, and location-based e-safety alerts and value addes services in an M3G-based 3D environment.

[edit] Spoken Languages

Italian is its mother tongue. He learned French at school, and since his hometown is near France, he has a good knowledge of this language. He learned English too during the universitary years. He has no problems in reading, but he still has some difficulties in understanding fast-spoken English.

[edit] Free Time

Samuele likes very much astronomy and computer programming, but also birdwatching and nature. He is a DMoz editor since 1998 (actually is World/Italiano editor), and a Wikipedian (in Italian Wikipedia) since 2005. He also likes photography, travels, and small islands. He discovered also Geocaching as a funny technological outdoor activity. He also has a deep interest in psychology, classical music and Slow food: he is also an occasional cook, for parents, friends and his wife. They are all still alive, so maybe its food is not so bad...
