[edit] Emerson as tax payer?

I thought Ralph Waldo Emerson was the payer of the taxes in place of Thoreau. Have I been misled? I used to consider myself a student of the American Renaissance--this will be pretty embarassing if it turns out to be untrue. Telestylo 07:27, 20 November 2005 (UTC)

    • It is a common misconception that Emerson paid the tax to get Thoreau out of jail. Although it is not known for sure who paid the tax, it was probably Thoreau's aunt Mary (or maybe Maria?)
