Samudra-Manthan

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sumudra Manthan is described in Hindu texts such as Puranas. It is also described in Ramayana of Valmiki. The story of samudra manthan started with Sage Kashyapa. He had two wives; Diti and Aditi. The sons of Diti were known as Daityas and those of Aditi were known as Devatas. Devatas were more intelligent than daityas but the latter were more physically powerful. These were two races out produced by Kashyapa. There have been terrible fights between the two groups. They suggested to daityas that we can get the Amrit by Samudra Manthan. The word samudra means sea. Amrit is the medicine if taken by somebody it will make him immortal. They get the Amrit. Devatas grabed all the amrit by trick and daityas did not get anything. The Devatas were also called suras and the daityas were called asuras.
