Samrala is a city and a municipal council in Ludhiana district in the Indian state of Punjab. It is about 35 km east of the district headquarters Ludhiana, on the highway to Chandigarh. The town falls under the police district of Khanna. Nearest Railway Station is Khanna, 18 km to the south. Malwa College, Bondli, was set up in the sixties to cater to the post-secondary educational needs of area residents by Malwa Educational Council, led by its then President, Mr. Ajmer Singh Kang. There is an Industrial Tranining Institute in the town as well. Another prestigious educational institution in the vicinity is A.S. College, Khanna, where students can go in to study science subjects.
Among the most notable personalities associated with this area is Urdu writer Suadat Hasan Manto. He was born and raised at Papraudi village, 6km from Samrala, at the house of his grandfather.

Samrala has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 76%, and female literacy is 68%. In Samrala, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age. The town has a mixed Hindu-Sikh population.
