Sami Moubayed is a Syrian political analyst, journalist, and author. He is the author of several books on modern Syria, the last two being "Damascus Between Democracy and Dictatorship" (Maryland, 2000) and "Steel & Silk: Men and Women Who Shaped Syria 1900-2000" (Cune Press, 2006).
Moubayed teaches at the Faculty of International Relations at al-Kalamoun University in Syria, and his articles on Middle East affairs have appeared in a variety of newspapers, including al-Ahram Weekly, Gulf News, The Daily Star, and Asia Times. He writes about modern Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Palestine. He is a panelist with The Washington Post's Post Global, and creator of www.syrianhistory.com, the first and only online museum of Syrian history. It contains over 2,000 photographs, documents, and rare audiovisual material on Syria during the years 1900-2000.
Moubayed has written much about pre-Baath Syria, and is a specialist on former Syrian President Shukri al-Quwatli, whose biography he authored in a book entitled "The George Washington of Syria" (Beirut, 2005). Moubayed studied at the American University of Beirut (AUB) and obtained his PhD in Middle East Politics from the University of Exeter.
Moubayed specialized in modern Syrian affairs under the guidance of Munir al-Ajlani, a Syrian parliamentarian, minister, and scholar from the pre-Baath Era. An advocate of the Palestinian Cause, he has written many articles on Palestinian affairs and was a strong supporter of former Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. Some anti-Arafat writers accused Moubayed of being an apologist for terrorism. He is also accused of being a creation of the reformist wing of the Baath Party that emerged under President Bashar Al-Assad.
