Sam Maloof (born January 16, 1916) at Chino, California is a furniture craftsman who designs his own pieces. Maloof rejects the title of artist although his admirers consider his works masterpieces of woodworking. Maloof designs evolve from one to another, in a constant state of evolution, rather than revolution. His pieces are known for their velvety touch and refreshing design. His work has been displayed in museums around the USA. All his pieces are custom made and there is currently a several year waiting period for customers who wish to place their orders. One of his rockers costs about $12,000. In 1985 he was named a MacArthur Fellow. Both Presidents Carter and Reagan have owned a Maloof rocker.
