Sam Hunt

Sam Hunt (b. Auckland, 1946 educated St Peter's College, Auckland) is a New Zealand performance poet. His website describes him as "New Zealand's best-known poet", which fans of James K. Baxter, R.A.K. Mason and Denis Glover would dispute, although he may well be the best-known living New Zealand poet.
His unique appearance —tall and rangy, usually wearing drainpipe trousers (he calls them ‘Foxton Straights’) and open-chested shirts, with long curly hair above a worn face—has made him one of New Zealand’s most recognisable people.
Sam Hunt is known for links between his works, two great example being; "Porirua Friday Night" compared to one of his later works, "Girl with Black Eye in Grocer's Shop". Both poems tell the story of a woman (possibly the same one in both poems) and how her dreams are slowly crushed over time, the first step toward her crushed spirits being her strong will to grow up quickly.
At his school (St Peter's College, Auckland) an annual literature competition has been named after him.
