From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- The Salviati were a prominent Florentine-Roman family who in the 15th century were bankers to Pope Sixtus IV. They were among those involved in the Pazzi Conspiracy of 1478, a plot to murder the leading mmembers of the Medici family in Florence. One member of the Salviati, the archbishop of Pisa Francesco Salviati, was known to be involved in the plot.
- The painter Francesco Salviati is not part of the Salviati family. He assumed the name after painting frescoes for the Palazzo Salviati.
- A family of Salviati were glass makers and mosaicists in Murano, Venice. They worked on several buildings in England during the 19th century, notably the Albert Memorial and Westminster Cathedral.
- In 1859, Antonio Salviati, a lawyer, in love with the mythical lagoon city, decided to revitalize the Venetian glass industry that was eclipsed by both English and Bohemian glass.
Employing the best Murano glass makers and technicians, SALVIATI developed a new method of making mosaic with glass, which rapidly found favour in European courts and capitals before conquering America and Asia.
He also created in his workshop a collection of glasses, stemware, bowls, chandeliers and vases, focusing specially on pieces engraved and decorated with gold.
The collection triumphed almost immediately at many international exhibitions and soon, subsidiaries were opened in New York, London, Paris, St. Petersburg, Frankfurt.
Then, Antonio Salviati founded a school so that artists could come and learn glass working techniques.
We owe to Salviati the rediscovery of the “aventurina glass”, the glass “a fiamma” and “opalino” glass.
In the XXth century, "Salviati" became property of the Maurizio Camerino family who after numerous projects including the Stanford University Chapel, decided to leave mosaic and to focus on the production of decorative objects and lighting.
- In Galileo's Dialogue, Salviati is the character who speaks for him. He is named after Galileo's friend Filippo Salviati (1582 - 1614).
