Salt & vinegar is a popular combination of condiments added to fish and chips in Britain, Ireland and the Commonwealth.

It, along with Plain, Salted and Cheese and Onion, is one of the most common flavours for crisps and is one of the two original seasonings. Vinegar solids or vinegar powder are used in combination with maltodextrin to hold the flavouring to the crisp.
The flavour combination is also are also very popular in Canada. Many add salt and vinegar in their pure form to french-fries. It is best known on potato chips or simply 'chips. Lays, Ruffles and Humpty Dumpty are the most prominent brands. The flavour is found sporadically in the U.S., but in some northern states, it is quite popular. Canadians travelling in the southern US get odd looks when asking for vinegar. "We clean the tables with that stuff" is often the response.
True lovers of the flavour are happy when opening a bag of chips and finding an extra thick coating has been applied to the chips. At times it is so powerful the consumer will feel the sensation in the mouth for a few hours, then find that skin will peel off the inside of his/her cheeks the next day.

The flavour is one of the most popular in the UK. Once synonymous with blue packaging, the dominance of the Walkers brand has seen its green packets confuse the homogeneity. Many of the best-selling brands of crisps have a Salt and Vinegar offering including Discos, Walkers, McCoys, Hula Hoops, Square Crisps, amongst others.
As part of the promotion of the brand by Walkers, the footballer Gary Lineker was hired to advertise and this lead to renamed Salt 'n' Lineker crisps.
