Salmon River, Nova Scotia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Salmon River is an unincorporated Canadian suburban community in central Nova Scotia's Colchester County.

A suburb of the town of Truro, Salmon River is located on the south side of the river from which it derives its name.

The defining feature in the community is Canadian National Railway's Truro Yard, located in the river flood plain. Newer suburban developments in Salmon River range up the hill along the south side of the valley.

[edit] Hockeyville competition

Salmon River was the winning entrant in the nationwide 2006 Hockeyville contest.

The community's ice hockey arena is privately owned and operated by the Deuville family. The small rink was constructed as an outdoor arena several decades ago and was subsequently covered over. Fees were charged to cover costs, however major capital costs such as a new roof were beyond the reach of the rink's owners and users. The community's support for the Hockeyville contest resulted in winning the grand prize of $50,000 in materials from Home Depot in June 2006, as well as being host to a NHL exhibition game in September 2006.
