Salihli

Salihli is a district (as well as this district's rather large center town) in Manisa Province in Western Turkey. Its 2000 census population was 83,137 for the urban center and 149,150 for the whole district.

Salihli is a city with a long history. Sardis, the capital city of Lydia (usually called Sart in Turkey) is at only 10 kilometers distance in the south of Salihli. A tomb that belonged to a Lydian King named Giges, the Artemis Temple and Marble Court with Gymnasium built by the Romans time and other similar historical ruins are widely visited by tourists.

The city of Salihli is located south of the Gediz river, on the slopes of a mountain chain called Bozdağ. Since it is situated on İzmir-Ankara motorway and İzmir-Afyonkarahisar-Ankara railway, it is a town that has developed rather well. It is at an altitude of 125 meters from the sea level. Aside from the city of Salihli, the district includes 8 townships with a municipality of their own (Adala, Durasıllı, Gökeyüp, Mersinli, Poyrazdamları, Sart/Mahmut, Taytan, Yılmaz) and 78 villages.

There are famous Lead and Mud Baths at 5 and 14 km. south of the town. The Demirköprü Dam is 24 km. far in the north. There are also a lot of promenade places around Salihli. 'Bozdağ' summits and the Gölcük lake located at a very high altitude near one of the summit is a region of great natural beauty, as well as a prized ski resort in winter. Seedless grape, cotton, tobacco and valonia oak occupy an important part in Salihli's industrial production. Its potatoes are also famous. A beautiful overview of Salihli can be seen in the restaurants/cafes situated on the hills around the town.

A notable aspect of Salihli's population is the interesting presence of semi-nomadic Tahtacı Yörüks and of descendants of Kazakh Turks who had settled in the region in the beginning of the 20th century.
