Salai means clan in manipuri. Traditionally the Meitei people of Manipur are divided into seven salais.

Salai is also the tree species used for tapping of gum. This tree is found in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh in India.Its botanical name is Boswellia serrata family Burseraceae.
