Salão is a parish in the district of Horta in the Azores. The population in 2001 is 436, its density is 36.9/km² and the area is 11.8 km². The 2001 population was three inhabitants higher. Salão is linked with the road encircling the island of Horta. Another road linking directly with Horta and Cedros lies to the south

Salão features subdivisions including Canto, Carapeta, Cela, Lomba and Salão. The parish has 342 electors (Autárquicas 2005). Salão continues to be the least populated parish on the island. The principal economy are agriculture

The parish of is situated in the north coast of the island between Ponta da Ribeirinha and Ponta da Eira.

The inhabitants of Salão were founded by Castilian families which they expelled by the Portuguese residents them from Cedros in 1620. Many were dislocated to the south of Cedros and established a new locality named 'Carapeta, Capareta, of Carapeto. The disolution of Salão elevated itself to a parish in 1730.

The small Fonte da Carpenta was destroyed in the earthquake of 1926.

The 'Porto do Salao, a small fishing area along with the camping park. The Parque Florestal do Cabouco Velho situated in the higher part of the parish reunites an area of five hectares of all conditions for farming and lives in nature. It features endemic plants, picnic areas and a recreation area for children.

The 1871 population was reported at 1,186 inhabitants. The population becan to decling due to emigration to other parts of the world especially North America, the 1962 population dropped to 750 inhabitants with 210 families. In 1970, the population dropped to 585 and declining since 1991. The population loss caused the neighboring parish Ribeirinha to have more population in the 20th century.

Other than agriculture which includes corn production, the Saloenses dedicates to fishing. Secondly in the 1867 statistics, the parish had 530 bovines, 400 ovines with 800 kg each, 200 caprines and 200 swines. The Porto do Salão was one of the first whaling ports in the Azores. The local encountered an ideal whaling near São Jorge and Graciosa. The parish has a whaling company, the "Companhia Baleeira Saloense" and was formed by the people of the parish. It had two whaling boats and one special.
