Sakazaki Naomori
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sakazaki Naomori (坂崎直盛?) (????-1616) was a daimyo in Japan, and he was an elite officer under the Japanese clan of Tokugawa following the Azuchi-Momoyama period of the 16th century to the Edo period of the 17th century.
When Tokugawa Ieyasu destroyed Toyotomi Hideyori (the son of Toyotomi Hideyoshi) at the Siege of Osaka (1615), Hideyori's wife and Ieyasu's granddaughter Senhime was rescued from Osaka Castle.
Legends tell that Naomori was the one who rescued Senhime, believing the promise that he would be allowed to marry her if he succeed in saving her. Today, many think that this is a mere story, and what Naomori actually did was only accompanying Senhime to her father's place after she was rescued out from the castle.
At any rate, Naomori died in 1616, little before the remarriage of Senhime to Honda Tadatoki. It is said that Naomori planned to capture Senhime, and when his plan was revealed to the shogun, he was forced to commit suicide. His act has long been explained by his rage against Ieyasu's betrayal and desperate efforts to marry Senhime, but here again this may be a story embroidered by later people, and Naomori may only have been a victim of political strife over the treatment of Senhime.
