Sakai (坂井市 -shi?) is a city located in Fukui, Japan. It lies to the north of Fukui City. It was founded on March 20, 2006, by the merger of Harue-chō, Maruoka-chō, Mikuni-chō, and Sakai-chō, the towns of the former Sakai District (坂井郡 -gun?). Sakai District was dissolved with this merger.

As of October 1, 2006, the city has an estimated population of 95,331 and a density of 454.15 persons per km². The total area is 209.91 km².

The population of the city is the second largest scale in Fukui Prefecture. Harue and Maruoka,in the South of the city, has the function as commuter town of the city of Fukui; accordingly its population growth rate is much high than any area in Fukui Prefecure.

Interesting places in Sakai are the Tojimbo Place of scenic beauty, the Maruoka Castle which is the oldest standing castle in Japan.
