From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Saint Mary's Basilica was founded in 1881 by Franciscan monks. Saint Mary's is the oldest catholic church in Phoenix, Arizona. Prior to Pope John Paul II's visit to Phoenix in 1987, the Holy Father elevated St. Mary's to a minor basilica. It is located at the corner of North 3rd Street and Brazos in downtown Phoenix. Mass is held daily and tours are available on each Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. and also by appointment. It is home to Arizona's largest collection of historic stained glass windows.
