St. John Fisher College is a private college in the Catholic tradition. It is located in Pittsford, New York,an eastern suburb of Rochester, Monroe County, New York. SJFC was founded in 1948 by the Congregation of St. Basil. Dr. Donald Bain was named the school's sixth president in November 2005, taking over for Dr. Katherine Keough who died in September 2004.

The College emphasizes liberal learning for students in traditional academic disciplines, as well as for those in more directly career-oriented fields. The campus is situated on 154 park-like acres—a beautiful setting for 20 modern buildings and a warm, friendly campus community. The College now offers 30 academic majors in the humanities, social sciences, sciences, business, and nursing, as well as nine pre-professional programs. Fisher now offers 11 graduate programs and 2 Doctoral programs.

St. John Fisher College is ranked by U.S. News & World Report among the "Tier 1" Northern Master's Universities. U.S News rates admissions to the College as "Selective".

St. John Fisher College has an undergraduate enrollment of approximately 2,700 students, of which some 90% are enrolled full time. Approximately 55% of Fisher's undergraduate students live on campus. The undergraduate enrollment breaks down by gender approximately 40% male and 60% female. Undergraduate faculty-student ratio: 14:1. Typical class size: 15 to 35 students. St. John Fisher was founded as an all male college but admitted women for the first time in September 1971.

St. John Fisher College is a collaborative community dedicated to teaching and learning in a personalized educational environment. The College is guided by its Catholic heritage, as expressed in the motto of its founders, the Basilian Fathers: "teach me goodness, discipline, and knowledge." Through an education rooted in the liberal arts, Fisher prepares individuals for lives of intellectual, professional, and civic integrity, in which diversity and service to others are valued and practiced.

St. John Fisher College is made up of the following Schools: The Bittner School of Business, the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. School of Education, the Wegmans School of Nursing, the School of Arts and Sciences, and the Wegmans School of Pharmacy.

Fisher offers 27 majors and 12 graduate programs. Five (5) mrmbers of the St. John Fisher faculty have received the prestigious Fulbright Scholarships.

St. John Fisher College offers the combined degree programs in Pre-Engineering ( 3+2 programs with Clarkson University; Columbia University; Manhattan College; University of Buffalo), Pre-Environmental Science and Forestry ( 2+2 program) with SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry), and a combined 3+4 Optometry program with Pennsylvania College of Optometry.

The five most popular majors at Fisher are as follows: 24% education, 23% business, management, marketing, and related support services, 11% communication, journalism, and related programs, 8% psychology, and 6% social sciences.

[edit] Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. School of Education

The mission of the School of Education at St. John Fisher College is to provide a quality educational experience that prepares candidates for distinguished careers in their chosen profession and for leadership roles in a diverse, rapidly changing, and increasingly technological society. To this end, we seek to:

  • Prepare highly capable and ethically responsible professional educators who are committed

to improving educational conditions, opportunities and outcomes for all students.

  • Prepare candidates who share the belief that all students can and will learn.
  • Prepare candidates who understand educational theory, research, best practices and the

use of various technologies, and how to apply this knowledge in diverse school settings and communities.

  • Prepare candidates to meet college, state and national standards and requirements for

graduation and certification.

Adolescence Education (7-12), Adolescence Education/Special Education (7-12), Childhood Education(1-6), Childhood Education/Special Education (1-6) are offered under this school.

The School of Education is named after Ralph C. Wilson, Jr., the founder, owner and president of the NFL's Buffalo Bills. Mr. Wilson and his family have been long time supporters of St. John Fisher College.

[edit] Bittner School of Business

The Bittner School of Business prepares professionally competent and ethically responsible graduates for careers as managers and professionals primarily for local and regional business. The school emphasizes excellence in teaching, close interaction with students, and recognizes that excellent teaching is informed by faculty actively engaged in research and scholarship. The faculty members produce research published in peer reviewed journals, and other recognized outlets for intellectual contribution that advances the scholarship of teaching, business practice and disciplinary knowledge.

Building on a strong liberal arts foundation, College’s accounting/finance/MIS and management/marketing departments have provided our students with a comprehensive and well-rounded education in their respective areas of specialization since the very beginning’s of the institution’s history.

Offering concentrations and/or majors in accounting, corporate finance, financial planning, human resources management, marketing, management information systems, and general business, these two departments service one of the largest student populations on campus.

A significant milestone in the history of Fisher’s business programs has been their accreditation by The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business ("AACSB International") which is recognized as the hallmark of excellence in management education. At the time this accreditation was gained, all business programs at the College were brought together in 2003 to form St. John Fisher College’s first professional school which was named the Bittner School of Business.

The majority of the schools programs are offered under the School of Arts and Sciences. American Studies, Anthropology, Applied Information Technology, Biology, Chemistry, Communication/Journalism, Computer Science, Economics, English, French, History, Interdisciplinary Studies, International Studies, Mathematics, Philosophy, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Religious Studies, Sociology, Spanish, and Sport Studies are all a part of this school.

[edit] Wegmans School of Pharmacy

The School was made possible by a $5 million gift by Robert Wegman. The Wegmans School of Pharmacy opened in Fall 2006, with an inaugural class of 55 students.

The Wegmans School of Pharmacy is only the fifth Pharmacy School in all of New York State and is the first Pharmacy School in the Greater Rochester community. The School of Pharmacy will award the Doctor of Pharmacy Degree (Pharm.D.) to candidates that successfully completed four years of professional study. Two years (64 semester hours) of pre-professional education is required for admission, followed by four years of professional studies.

[edit] Wegmans School of Nursing

On January 12, 2006, President Bain announced that Robert Wegman president of Wegmans Food Markets had contributed $8 million to the college to create a School of Nursing. This was the largest gift in Fisher’s history.

The Wegmans School of Nursing offers professional programs of study that prepare baccalaureate and master's degree graduates to positively influence health outcomes for culturally diverse individuals, families, and communities in a rapidly changing, highly complex health care environment.

Fisher’s nursing program is fully accredited by the New York State Education Department and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

[edit] Scholarships

Nearly 95% of first-year students receive some form of financial assistance. The average offer to incoming students is $16,000. Need-based and merit-based scholarships, as well as grants, loans, and part-time employment, are available for eligible students.

St. John Fisher College also offers two unique scholarships to incoming freshman—the Service Scholarship and the First Generation Scholarship.

The Service Scholarship recognizes and rewards high school seniors who demonstrate an ongoing interest in serving the needs of others through a commitment to community service. Each year, up to 36 students receive the scholarship award, which equals one-third of the total yearly cost of Fisher’s tuition, fees, and room and board for four years.

The Fannie & Sam Constantino First Generation Scholarship Program is designed to provide financial assistance to students whose parents did not attend a post-secondary institution. Up to thirty-six scholarships are awarded each year. The exact scholarship amount is determined based on financial need.

St. John Fisher College is a member of the Empire 8 Athletic Association along with other full member schools: Alfred University, Elmira College, Hartwick College, Ithaca College, Nazareth College, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Utica College. The Empire 8 also has affiliate members in football (Norwich University and Springfield College) and field hockey (Washington & Jefferson College). Stevens Institute of Technology (Hoboken, NJ) will be admitted to the conference as a full member effective fall 2007.

The school's mascot is the Cardinal. St. John Fisher College is a member of the NCAA and competes as a Division III school. St. John Fisher's sports teams have been highly successful. In 1999, the St. John Fisher Softball team became the first softball team in New York State history to win both the State Tournament and the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship. Their 39-11 mark was good for the sixth highest winning percentage in the country. The men's and women's basketball teams have also been highly successful in recent years. In 2006, Fisher's men's basketball team won the Empire 8 Conference title for the 4th consecutive year and the 5th time in six years, and advanced to the "Elite 8" of the NCAA Division 3 Tournament. In 2006, the football team had the best season in the program's 20-year history. Led by senior running back Mark Robinson and senior defensive back Gene Lang, the Cardinals finished the season with a 12-2 record overall and shared the Empire 8 Conference title with Springfield College, who handed the team their only regular season loss on Saturday, October 21 at home. The team received an at-large bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament, where they defeated Union College, Springfield College, and Rowan University to reach the national semifinals where they ultimately lost to the defending national champion Mount Union College Purple Raiders by a score of 26-14.

The college offers 13 varsity sports. Men compete in baseball, basketball, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, and tennis. Women compete in basketball, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball, and lacrosse.

Students may choose from a wide range of campus clubs and organizations, including student government, music groups, language clubs, cultural organizations, student publications, and intramural sports. Many academic departments also sponsor clubs.

[edit] Buffalo Bills Bausch & Lomb Training Camp

Beginning in 2000, St. John Fisher College became the home to the Buffalo Bills' NFL Training Camp. Training camp at Fisher is considered one of the best in the NFL and attracts a wide range of fans from the northeast and Canada. In addition to the actual players, the camp features numerous activities including a quarterback challenge, and obstacle course, and a football toss. The camp is free to the public.

In 2002, students at Fisher launched the Cardinal Courier, a new newspaper. This publication replaced the previous paper, The Pioneer. The Pioneer had fallen into disarray and had an ever-shrinking staff. The Courier represents a distinct opposite of The Pioneer as the younger paper has won several awards, including Columbia gold medals, and covers all aspects of the college, including news, lifestyles, sports, and opinion.

Beginning in 2006, the Courier began awarding an Male and Female Athlete of the Year accolade. All Fisher athletes were eligible and the award was voted upon by the Courier sports department. The award will continue to be issued in 2007.
