[edit] Background

The Austrian Jesuits were in South Australia to help mission the Mid North and Far North regions of South Australia. They were based at Sevenhill, South Australia in the Clare Valley, and constructed a short-lived boarding College, Saint Aloyisius College open between 1856 and 1886. This College is the site of Saint Aloysius, Sevenhill and Sevenhill Cellars. It also makes up one part of the Centre of Ignatian Spirituality.

The Irish Jesuits came much later to Australia during the 1870's and set up schools such as St Ignatius' College, Riverview, St Aloysius' College and Loyola College, Mount Druitt in Sydney (New South Wales) as well as Xavier College, (Victoria). Saint Ignatius' College, Adelaide was begun in the mid Twentieth Century.

[edit] History

Saint Ignatius College began in Queen Street, Norwood, South Australia in 1951, at the request of Archbishop Matthew Beovich [citation needed] to commence a Jesuit day school. The college took over the Marist school site, as a boys only college. The initial intake was from Year 3 onwards. (Students prior to this year level were educated at Loreto, the Parish school, St Joseph's Memorial School or the local state schools.)

In 1967, a secondary campus was opened at Athelstone, at the then outer suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia. From 1972, the school accepted Kildare College enrolments from girls wanting to complete their secondary studies. (At that stage, Kildare offered education up to Year 10). In 1995, the school changed to offer coeducational enrolements from Reception to Year 12, the first Jesuit school in the world to do so.

Its sister schools include St Ignatius' College, Riverview, St Aloysius' College and Loyola College, Mount Druitt in Sydney and Xavier College in Melbourne.
