Saint Anthony Main
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Saint Anthony Main is a shopping and office complex located on Main Street in Southeast Minneapolis, Minnesota, along the Mississippi River, adjacent to and integrated with Riverplace, a housing and office complex, next to the St. Anthony Falls, the only waterfall on the Mississippi River. It opened as a festival marketplace in the 1980s. Though initially popular, with lots of small shops selling tourist items, it had economic troubles after noise restrictions reduced its hours of operation, and now is home to a movie theater, some bars and restaurants, a small art gallery, and a Segway tour operator. It classifies as a dead mall.
Saint Anthony Main's fate has been similar to other similar developments in the area, including Galtier Plaza, City Center, Gaviidae Common, Town Square, and the Minnesota World Trade Center.
Some of the buildings part of the complex date from the 1850s when the Village of Saint Anthony on the north/east side of the Mississippi River was still a separate jurisdiction from Minneapolis itself.
