The Sailor Moon R movie is the first of three theatrically released Sailor Moon movies. Its full name in Japanese is Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon R The Movie (劇場版 美少女戦士セーラームーンR Gekijouhan Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon R?). The English dub is called Sailor Moon R the Movie: Promise of the Rose. It debuted in Japanese theatre on December 5, 1993. It is named for the second arc of the Sailor Moon anime, Sailor Moon R, as it was released around the same time. The events portrayed seem to take place shortly afterward.

[edit] Plot
Fiore came to the Earth as a young child of alien origin who had previously wandered the stars after being separated from the others of his kind (possibly the children of the Makaiju, but this is not stated explicitly). When he arrived on the Earth he hid in a hospital. He met Mamoru who was recovering from the accident that killed his parents. The two became fast friends.
The atmosphere on Earth was too weak to sustain Fiore and he was forced to leave to save his own life. As a parting gift Mamoru gave Fiore a red rose which had a profound effect on the alien. He cherished the flower and promised to return to the Earth one day with many flowers for Mamoru.
Years later, after searching the galaxy Fiore came upon the Kisenian Flower which enslaved the innocent alien and drove him on a path of destruction, turning his friendship with Mamoru into an obsession.
He returned to the Earth and confronted Mamoru amidst a storm of rose petals revealing that he'd kept his promise and found a flower worthy of their friendship. When he found that Mamoru had a girlfriend, Usagi, he began to threaten the group and left without a trace.
He sent one of the Kisenian's offspring, Glycina, to Tokyo where it began draining the life energy from the populace. The Senshi responded to the attack and defeated the monster but Fiore appeared and attacked in retaliation. He was about to kill Sailor Moon by impaling her on spikes from his fingertips but Tuxedo Mask jumped in front of her and took the hit himself.
Mortified, Fiore took Mamoru's limp body back to his lair on an asteroid that was rapidly approaching Earth and began to revive him with his alien technology. The Senshi teleported to the asteroid to battle him but the Kisenian Flower nearly completely absorbed the alien and they were driven back. A resucitated Mamoru escaped his holding cell and pierced Fiore with a rose which partially broke the Kisenian's hold on him. The flowers on the asteroid that Kisenian had planned to spread across Earth began to vanish, and the asteroid broke apart and began to plunge toward Earth.
Fiore attempted to destroy the Senshi a final time but Sailor Moon's Silver Crystal halted him when it took on the form of a rose. Usagi revealed that the flower Mamoru had given the alien had initially come from Usagi, who met the young orphan in the hospital during the birth of her brother. Compassionately moved to tears, Fiore disappeared. Sailor Moon, by now having already transformed into Princess Serenity, used the power of the Silver Crystal to halt the asteroid's fall to Earth. She managed to put the asteroid into orbit, though at the expense of her life and the breaking of the Silver Crystal.
With Sailor Moon lifeless in Mamoru's arms, and her guardians grieving over her, Fiore reappeared and produced a new flower which he called the "flower of life." He explained that its nectar contained his own life essence, and that Mamoru should give it to Sailor Moon.
Mamoru wet his lips with the nectar and kissed Sailor Moon. The Silver Crystal repaired itself and Sailor Moon revived. Fiore, now redeemed, reverted to being a child and left, presumably to wander the universe again or find a new world to live on.
[edit] New characters
[edit] Fiore
Fiore (フィオレ Fiore?, Lit. Flower (Italian)) is one of the main antagonists in Sailor Moon R: The Movie. Fiore is a lonely alien who takes great strength from his friendship with Mamoru Chiba, spending many years searching for a worthy flower for Mamoru.
Fiore is Italian for "flower." According to the Bishōjo Senshi Sērā Mūn R Movie Memorial Album, director Kunihiko Ikuhara noted that Fiore's full name is written in Japanese as Fiorieiru (フィオリエイル Lit. Fiore (フィオレ) + alien (エイリアン)?)[1]
Fiore's character was similar to Ail and En, the Makaiju children from the first arc of Sailor Moon R. His clothing, which changes several times during the course of the movie, greatly resembles that of the afforementioned characters and he shares a similar history as well as an aversion to the environment on Earth.
In the Japanese version, he is voiced by Hikaru Midorikawa as an adult and Tomoko Maruo as a child. In the English version, he is voiced by Joel Feeney as an adult and Mary Long as a child.
[edit] Kisenian Flower
The Kisenian (キセニアン Kisenian?) Flower is one of the main antagonists in Sailor Moon R: The Movie. In the English dub, she is known as the Kisenian Blossom.
The Kisenian Flower has to destroy stars and planets to survive. Alone, she holds no power. For this reason she needs someone to perform in her place, preferably someone with a 'vulnerable heart'. (That is, Fiore.) Luna calls the Kisenian the 'most dangerous flower in the universe'.
Once picked, the Kisenian Flower begins pouring 'hatred' into the weak heart of her victim, causing them to fall under her spell and carry out her every whim. Eventually, through her subject, she will have grown powerful enough to destroy the entire planet along with the unfortunate individual whom she'd deceived. After the flower has destroyed any star or planet, she sits and waits once more for the next unsuspecting person to come along and succumb into her allure.
In its' romanized form, the name Kisenian (キセニアン "Kisenian"?) is a Japanese approximation of the botany term xenia, which according to the OED is a term for a specific action of hybridisation which refers to "direct action or influence of foreign pollen upon the seed or fruit which is pollinated." The word itself is based on the Greek concept for hospitality. [2] Because of its etymology, the Flower's name is sometimes spelled Xenian.
In the original Japanese, she is voiced by Yumi Toma. In the English dub, she is voiced by Susan Aceron.
[edit] Trivia
- When Fiore tries to take the crystal from Usagi (on the meteor), Fiore talks while Usagi's lips move.[1] This is a problem that was fixed in a later Japanese release, but it appears the Pioneer was given the defective version. The dub has the characters speaking in the correct sequence. [2]
- The names of Fiore's flower minions are Glycina, Campanula, and Dahlian,[3] but in the movie, Fiore doesn't call them by name.
- At the beginning of the movie, when Mamoru hands Fiore the rose, it's closed, meaning that it symbolizes both innocence and friendship, as it deals with the childhood love of Mamoru and Fiore. Later in the movie, during a flashback, when Sailor Moon shows Fiore her memory, the rose is seen full bloomed. The full bloomed rose is a symbol of the deep bond between them, their love, throughout the series. It may also be symbolic of the change/maturation in Fiore's feelings. [3]
- Fiore and Ail (of the Makaiju) have the same seiyuu (voice actor), as do the Kisenian flower and Ann. This similarity has futher supported the belief that Fiore is of the same race as Ail and Ann.
[edit] Make Up! Sailor Senshi
Shown in Japanese theatres as a trailer before the Sailor Moon R movie was a 17 minute short named Make Up! Sailor Senshi. [4] Usagi and Chibiusa overhear two girls talking about the Sailor Senshi. Humorously, as the girls discuss which is the smartest, most elegant, strongest, and the leader of the senshi, Usagi claims those titles for herself. Chibiusa shakes her head at Usagi's delusion. Clips are shown from the debut of each Sailor Senshi, and that girl's image song is played in the background.
When even Tuxedo Mask is mentioned, and the girls go to leave without having mentioned Sailor Moon, Usagi butts in on their conversation and asks them directly about Sailor Moon. The girls give a series of glowing compliments about Sailor Moon, but unlike they did for the other senshi, they also list her faults. After the girls leave, Usagi sarcastically apologises for being a clumsy cry-baby and then bursts into tears.
