Saidu Teaching Hospital

Saidu Group of Teaching Hospital, Swat, Pakistan is situated in Saidu Sharif, the capital of Swat, Pakistan on the bank of Swat River within easy reach of Saidu Sharif Airport.
The hospital consists of two wings (Central Wing and Saidu Wing) located in two separate buildings 1500 metres from each other, and has 500 beds. An extension which will double its capacity is in progress. Each wing contains its own X-ray department, clinical laboratories and wards. The hospital employs 104 medical staff (22 specialists and 82 nurses), and serves the whole of Swat's Malakand Division and some parts of Kohistan District as well. it is the fifth largest hospital in the Northwest Frontier region of Pakistan.
The Central Hospital was established in 1927 and originally consisted of an outpatients department with a medical officer in charge, a dispensary, a dressing room and two small wards for male and female patients. Another hospital with the name of Saidu Hospital (originally known as Zanana Hospital) was founded in 1954, mainly for the female patients. In 1958 a 15-bed children's hospital was established in an already existing Red Crescent building adjacent to Saidu Hospital.
In 1971 the three Hospitals, along with the city's TB hospital, were amalgamated and given the name of Saidu Group of Hospitals, Swat. Total capacity at the times was 310 beds.
In 1974 60-beds were added as Eye, [ENT], and children's wards, and in 1981 a house-doctor's hostel was added. Further expansions came in 1987 (a 15-bed casualty unit) and 1988 (a 12-bed Intensive care unit and a nurses' hostel). Between 1993 and 1997, a 100-bed ward comprising orthopedic care, gynaecology, psychiatry and children's health was completed and commissioned.
In September 2000, the hospital was declared a teaching hospital for use by the students of Saidu Medical College, Swat by the Health Department of NWFP in Peshawar. Now another hospital with the help of fedral government for cancer patients is under process.it is the branch of ernum hospital funtioning in peshawar for cancer patients. this article is written by Mohammad salim khan working in saidu Group of teaching hospital swat pakistan since 1995.
