Sagamore (title)

A sagamore is the head of a Native American tribe. The word is generally synonymous with sachem, although a sachem is sometimes considered a chief of the first rank and a sagamore one of the second rank.

In slang terms, sachem can also refer to a political leader, although this term is not often employed in modern usage.
