[edit] List of basic linguistic topics

Doing good work there :) It'll give people a good start, and provide a list of articles that need to be improved. A few of them are just stubs. - FrancisTyers 13:08, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] cognates

What is the difference between a false cognate and a false friend?--Rockero 21:33, 28 January 2006 (UTC)

The terms are frequently confused for each other. In the strictest sense, cognates are words in different languages that come from the same ancestral root. False cognates are words which look like they are cognates, but are not.
False friends are words in different languages that look very similar (and may be either real cognates or false cognates), but mean very different things. False friends are a common source of errors for people learning a second language. Sacundim 21:54, 28 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Transportación

Yes, I know. It is a "pseudoanglicism"[1]. The term is accepted by DRAE but it has been in disuse for two or three centuries. My point was that it did not become common again till around 20-30 years ago, due to contact with English. See --Asterion 17:57, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
