[edit] History

In June 1859, the Archbishop of Melbourne, Dr. Goold, petitioned the Sisters of Mercy in Dublin to establish a community in Geelong. Dr. Goold's request inspired the Superior, Mother Xavier Maguire. On September 5, 1859, Mother Xavier, accompanied by Sister Margaret Mullally and others, set sail for Geelong. Despite lack of resources, the nuns persevered, and in 1860 the Sisters of Mercy opened Sacred Heart College. For many years, it served as a co-educational school and housed a number of boarders; today, it is a Catholic girls' school, with no boarders.

[edit] Curriculum

Sacred Heart College offers the VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education), and has introduced the International Baccalaureate for middle years students. Year 11 and 12 pupils may also choose to undertake a VET (Vocational Education and Training) or VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) program.

[edit] Myths and Folklore

The Sacred Heart Music Corridor is the most infamous part of the SHC bluestone building in Retreat Rd. Being as old as it is, there is no wonder that students are mystified by the tales surrounding this mysterious part of the building. Many students and teachers alike believe the Music Corridor - adorned in rich red carpets - to be haunted, occupied by ghosts past and present.

[edit] "Sr Julianas"

On one of the door handles in the Music Corridor, beside a flight of rich red stairs, is a door with a label on it: "Sr Julianas". A long-running myth between students is that, if a student is to touch the door-handle with their bare hands, the girl will die at age 65. It is not uncommon for a passer-by to witness a plastic bag, or other covering, over the door handle: the girl that has been required to open the door has not taken her chances, but rather guarded against the possibility of dying at age 65.
