The M60A1 Sabra tank upgrade program is designed to upgrade 170 Turkish M60A3 MBT. The Israeli Military Industries (IMI) is upgrading the M60A3 with a new 120-mm smoothbore gun, Elbit Systems electric gun and turret drive stabilization system with a new fire control system, and a new IMI armor package.
The prototype was delivered to Turkey in late 2005 and is now undergoing tests. Several other prototypes are being tested in Israel as part of a USD 700 million contract. Israeli armour officers described the upgraded Turkish M60A3 configuration, also known as the Sabra Mk III, as "a totally new tank", with one IDF armour specialist claiming that "in some areas it even supersedes the Israeli Merkava Mk IV".
