Saber Marionette (セイバーマリオネット Seibā Marionetto?) is a group of anime, manga and light novel series created by Satoru Akahori. It began with a short story published in the October 1994 issue of Gekkan Dragon Magazine, which lead the way to 12 volumes of serialized light novels which ran through June of 1999. It eventually spawned a long-running manga series illustrated by Yumisuke Kotoyoshi titled Saber Marionette Z and was later adapted into an anime series which first aired on TV Tokyo in October 1996.

In January of 1995 a 12 episode audio drama series called SM Girls Saber Marionette R aired on the radio show Nowanchatte Say You. The audio drama concluded in April of 1995 and the story was continued one month later with the release of the first episode of the Saber Marionette R OVA. Episode two came out in late July of that year, and in September, the OVA's third and final episode was released.

In October 1995 the SM Girls Saber Marionette J audio drama series premiered on Nowanchatte Say You and ran through to January 1996. October 1996 then brought what is arguably the best known and most popular work of the Saber Marionette saga to TV viewers throughout Japan, the Saber Marionette J anime series. The series ran through March of 1997 with 25 episodes.

In the following October, a sequel arrived on video, the Saber Marionette J Again OVA. In June 1998, the sixth and final episodes of the OVA came out. Continuing the tradition of October releases, in October of 1998, the Saber Marionette J to X TV series was first broadcast. The series ran for 26 episodes, concluding in March 1999.

The Saber Marionette R OVA is currently licensed by Media Blasters. The Saber Marionette J TV series, the Saber Marionette J Again OVA, and the Saber Marionette J to X TV series are currently licensed by Bandai Entertainment. This is a 6-episode OVA whose events take place after Saber Marionette J. In this story, Faust asks Otaru to receive the three Saber Dolls in his apartment, so he can educate them as he did with Lime, Cherry, and Bloodberry. At the same time, Lorelei is asked to repair Tiger's maiden circuit, which is broken.

Meanwhile, planet Terra II is beginning to experiencing a plasmatic crisis. And the key to save the world lies within a new marionette, which will bear the name Marine. The mystery behind Marine lies in her maiden circuit, and is not unveiled until episode 4. All we know is that she matures faster than the other marionettes, and is stronger than Bloodberry and Panther combined.

[edit] Saber Marionette J to X

J to X picks up about a year after the end of J. Otaru and the girls continue to live routine lives, while Lorelei works on cloning project to create females. The first set of episodes reveal the growth of the girls and the people around them, including the Saber Dolls.

When Lorelei is kidnapped, Otaru attempts to free her, when he is confronted by Faust. Its revealed that it is a clone of Faust being manipulated by Doctor Hess.

The Second half of the series take place in Xian, where the girls were abducted and their memories were erased. Lime went to work as a nurse, Cherry was working in the orphanage and Bloodberry in the circus. During this time Otaru and Hanagata are framed by a Hess and his associates for a terrorist act. Otaru manages to rescue the girls, but is severely hurt in the process. He begins to think they would be better off without him so he sets off to return to Japoness.

In essence, it causes Lime to doubt her existence, especially her wish to be a real human; Cherry and Bloodberry too. In a dream, Doctor Hess said he could transform the girls into humans, causing Lime to hope. Lime goes to Hess, while Cherry and Bloodberry attempt to stop her. Lime is shocked to discover that she has been tricked, and is about to become the power source for Hess' new ship, The NeoMesopotamia.

Hess reveals he is over 400 years old, and was on Terra 2 a century before the Mesapotamia incident. He is seeking to return home to Earth for revenge, with a powerful new ship to get him there. He sees Terra 2's destruction as an event of little importance.

By their good fortune, Otaru, Faust and the Saber Dolls convince them about their existence and they escape from the ship, but in that moment the Neomesopotamia caused a big Earthquake in Terra 2. So then, the marionettes follow Doctor Hess to the Vortex and save the planet but when they return, the ship explodes causing the destruction of the marionettes and their circuits.

But like a miracle, they appeared as souls and Doctor Hess sent them to the place where three female clones were waiting. After that the planet was in calm and some time later the three marionettes were reborn as human girls and became Otaru's daughters.

As time goes on, Hanagata wrote a novel of Otaru and the girl's adventures. The Saber Dolls were free to do everything they wanted. As for the Saber dolls, Panther became Hanagata's editor, Linx a happy reporter and Tiger was traveling to find out more about herself. Faust went to research the planet.
